Announcing the annual Focus on Biology science imaging contest

The Biodiversity Center and the Department of Integrative Biology is pleased to announce the annual Focus on Biology science imaging contest! Focus on Biology celebrates visual explorations of our research in the form of photographs, micrographs, figures, and illustrations.

Contest winners and honorable mentions will be printed and displayed during a Department of Integrative Biology event at the end of the spring 2019 semester (details TBA).

Participation Eligibility: Participants must be formally associated (faculty, staff, student, or other official affiliation) with the Department of Integrative Biology at The University of Texas at Austin during the Spring 2019 semester.

Categories: Each submission will be judged in one of three categories:

People of Science - images of researchers at work
Science Subjects - images (illustrations or photographs) of natural history, field sites, behavior, microscopy
Science Figures - figures, model outputs, and other graphics summarizing research results

Submission guidelines:

Entries will be be emailed as digital files to contest coordinator Alex Wild (alex.wild@utexas.edu), subject line “FocusContest”. The entry deadline is April 05, 2019, at 6:00pm CST. Submissions must be jpg files with high resolution and low compression, at a minimum size of 2048 pixels in the widest dimension. Original resolution preferred. Submissions must be still images in 2 dimensions. Examples include, but are not limited to, photographs, drawings, digital illustrations, electron micrographs, digital modelling output.

Submissions must include a caption providing basic details of subject matter, location, and other pertinent information. Digital manipulation is allowed provided that edits beyond simple levels adjustments are reported in the submission; judges may take this information into consideration.

Each participant may submit up to 4 images per category; if participants submit more than 4 images, judges will only consider the first three received.

Judging: Submissions will be evaluated by an external panel of judges unaffiliated with Integrative Biology. Criteria for evaluation include technical competence, composition, and biological interest.

Intellectual Property: Participants retain copyright of all submissions. Participants must have created and hold the rights to any submitted image and assent that submission does not involve third-party claims. Submission to the contest grants the Department of Integrative Biology a non-exclusive, perpetual license to distribute and display the submitted works for non-commercial purposes related to department functions.
